Astronomy Friday – The Southern Pinwheel
Messier 83, also known as the Southern Pinwheel galaxy, is a massive spiral galaxy with loosely wound spiral arms in the constellation Hydra. It is one of the closest barred spiral galaxies and is known for its tremendous star formation and supernova activity.
