The AG Has Committed Perjury Multiple Times But Gets To Stay To Protect Mueller
People have remarked how Donald Trump pollutes and taints everything he touches. The most perfect example of that is how Democrats are reacting to Jeff Sessions.
Sessions is a guy who has lied under oath at least two times to Congress. He lied on his security clearance report and was forced to revise it ex post facto. And every one of those lies has involved his contacts with Russia. In addition, he recused himself from the Russian investigation and then participated in the firing of James Comey by engaging in the cover-up story that it was all about his actions regarding the Clinton email investigation. In fact, as Trump made clear just hours later, the real reason was that Comey refused to shut down the Russia investigation.
This would be bad enough for just some regular government employee, but Jeff Sessions is the Attorney General of the United States. In any other world other than the Trump world, Sessions would already have left, falling on his sword to protect the administration he works for and, more importantly, the rule of law. But Sessions, for whatever reason, perhaps ego or honor, will not go.
Normally, then, he would be hauled back in front of those same committees where he perjured himself and be held to account. But the Republicans don’t want to do that, because it only highlights the Trump’s campaigns contacts with Russia in a high-profile hearing. Democrats should be calling for his impeachment, but instead simply want to him come back and explain his perjury.
But neither party really wants to see Sessions step down. Some Republicans simply want him there to protect Trump. Democrats and some other Republicans both know that, if Sessions does leave, Trump will replace him with someone who probably will fire Mueller. With Sessions as AG, but recused from the Russian investigation, Rosenstein is left in charge of Mueller and has shown no indication to restrict him. Right now, that suits both Democrats and Republicans.
So we are left in a situation where the Attorney General is a known perjurer and no one will do anything about it. And the rule of law in America suffers another blow. All because Donald Trump pollutes and corrupts government and it ends up tainting both sides of the aisle.
